EXCLUSIVE: The song “Popular” representing Sweden at Eurovision 2011 is a cover?

Sweden will participate in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with the song „Popular„. Part of the melody is stolen from „Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel.

eric_saade_plagiarism_sweeden_eurovision_2Few days ago, exclusivNews.ro talked about the striking resemblance between the Serbian song and „Hairspray” musical. This time we deal with a more obvious cover. Although only few certain harmonic structures in the song “Popular” resemble to the main theme of “Uptown Girl”, the plagiarism is easy to be identified.

One of the melodic sequences of the song „Popular„, which is inserted twice in the three-minute song, is similar to the main harmonic construction of the song „Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel, launched in 1983.

The music and the lyrics of the song „Popular” are signed by Fredrik Kempe. The singer is Eric Saad, 20. The story is about a young man who wants to conquest the heart of the girl he loves, by becoming famous and deserving appreciation.

sweden_eurovision_stolen_song_2011_The video clip is part of an international campaign to combat the bullying of adolescents and youth. The character played by Eric Saad is assaulted by some persons with antisocial manners. But with his dance talent, he wins the hearts of people, and the bullies disappear from his life.

Sweden will participate in the eighth position in the Second Semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place on the evening of May 12, 2011. The Final will be held on May 14 at the Fortuna Düsseldorf Arena in Germany. Until today, April 27, representatives of the European Broadcasting Union and the Eurovision Song Contest didn’t ban from the competition the song „Popular„. This can happen if a special committee of the EBU and ESC will meet and conclude that the Swedish song is a plagiarism. Otherwise, Fredrik Kempe and Eric Saad will participate at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.
